#9 UFOs and USEFUL BRAINS

UFOs: Let’s think about it for a minute.

What mode of transportation would it take, what life-form would it require, for something intelligent to travel, say at the speed of light (unless of course that intelligence knows some swifter transport), that is, buckle up for moving along at one hundred and eighty-six thousand miles a second (am I right?). 

And say they are coming from somewhere near the center of our galaxy (near the constellation Sagittarius, my November teapot in the sky) which is calculated to be a mere 5,878,000,000,000 miles away. The distance will require thirty thousand light years in route. That’s a whole lot longer than the car trip my parents took my brother and me from Phoenix to Atkins, Arkansas when we were children. That trip only seemed light-years long. Our UFO visitors surely know how to pack for light-year travel. 

Good luck catching us—we are spinning at a hundred and fifty miles per second way out on a starry disk far from, but still belonging to, our Home galaxy center. With any luck, our solar system might circle our galaxy center in about two hundred million years. Goodness knows, I hope UFO travelers know that our galaxy is itself traveling at a high rate and sometimes in utter darkness through the universe (how big is that?) along with the billions of other galaxies. 

Now, think about this (you can because, well . . . ): We can put all that vastness of thought inside our heads, inside the brain where at the least 100 trillion neural connections work non-stop to deliver and receive information about things like concepts of space and time and UFOs. You know, 1,000 times more, at least, in your head, than stars in our galaxy. Might as well use them.
